"A tour through the incredibly rich history of the Isle of Wight, from our world-renowned dinosaur and fossil collections through our Roman occupation and on to the Victorians who made the Island famous as one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations."
This trip works best if taken chronologically, either forwards in time or backwards, but we're happy to substitute venues to meet your own individual needs.
When compiling this itinerary we have assumed half-day visits on the first and last days to allow travel to/from the Isle of Wight.
Our tours are suitable for all age groups, but the subject matter and venues highlighted here are best suited to the following:
Red Funnel Ferries
The original Isle of Wight ferry company with a history spanning over 150 years
You have to take a ferry to reach the Isle of Wight ... so why not travel with Red Funnel and get your students learning from the moment they step on board?
Offering a wide range of learning activities covering most subjects and age groups, Red Funnel are our preferred travel partner.
Cruise across to the Isle of Wight on Red Funnel Ferries, making use of their amazing array of pre-prepared educational resources.
History aspects include economic need and development of the ferry service as well as other types of transport in this area, types of ship and buildings you can see en route.
Dinosaur Isle
All year facility combining entertainment, education and enjoyment.
A purpose-built interactive dinosaur museum which properly displays and conserves the rich geological fossil collections and dinosaur related artefacts primarily discovered around the Isle of Wight, one of Europe's richest dinosaur localities.
Your visit will include a tour of the museum, a group fossil-handling session led by a qualified palaeontologist followed by a fossil hunt on the nearby beach and cliffs.
Robin Hill Country Park
Start Your Adventure...
The park's 88 acres give plenty of room for your party to run free and let off some steam, and with its big mix of features and attractions, it makes a whole day out and excellent value for money. It's no wonder nearly 16,000 school pupils come through our gates each year to enjoy the park.
Robin Hill is home to Combley Roman Villa - a buried farmstead originally built after the Roman invasion of Britain in 43AD. An interpretation barn tells the story of the rise and fall of the Roman empire, and of the archaeological digs that revealed the villa to the world.
Blackgang Chine
Land of Imagination...
Every year hundreds of school parties from across the country visit Blackgang Chine. Childrens' imaginations run wild as they enjoy the many themed areas around the park.
Blackgang provides a fertile base for activity play and learning, with exhibitions on coastal erosion, woodland & countryside crafts and the 'Wight Experience' "helicopter trip" over the Island!
Blackgang has a long history of coastal erosion which is very evident around the site, along with a reputation for being a smugglers' haunt back in the day!
Osborne
Visit Queen Victoria's summer retreat
Bring history to life and get a real insight into the private lives of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children at Osborne. Their home can teach many aspects of the curriculum across numerous subjects in a fun and engaging way. Enjoy a free self-led visit or get hands-on with history as part of a Discovery Visit, led by the formidable (and wonderful) costumed interpreter Mrs Pilkington. During the session your pupils will step into the world of a servant and discover what life was like below stairs.
No trip to the Island would be complete without a visit to this royal seaside palace where Queen Victoria lives with her beloved Prince Albert and their nine children.
