"A detailed tour through the incredibly rich history of the Isle of Wight, from our world-renowned dinosaur and fossil collections through our Roman occupation and on to the Victorians who made the Island famous as one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations."

This trip works best if taken chronologically, either forwards in time or backwards, but we're happy to substitute venues to meet your own individual needs.

When compiling this itinerary we have assumed half-day visits on the first and last days to allow travel to/from the Isle of Wight.

Red Funnel Ferries
The original Isle of Wight ferry company with a history spanning over 150 years

You have to take a ferry to reach the Isle of Wight ... so why not travel with Red Funnel and get your students learning from the moment they step on board?

Day 1 Activity 2

Dinosaur Isle
All year facility combining entertainment, education and enjoyment.

A purpose-built interactive dinosaur museum which properly displays and conserves the rich geological fossil collections and dinosaur related artefacts primarily discovered around the Isle of Wight, one of Europe's richest dinosaur localities.

Your visit will include a tour of the museum, a group fossil-handling session led by a qualified palaeontologist followed by a fossil hunt on the nearby beach and cliffs.

Day 2 Activity 1

Blackgang Chine
Land of Imagination...

Every year hundreds of school parties from across the country visit Blackgang Chine. Childrens' imaginations run wild as they enjoy the many themed areas around the park.

Blackgang provides a fertile base for activity play and learning, with exhibitions on coastal erosion, woodland & countryside crafts and the 'Wight Experience' "helicopter trip" over the Island!

Blackgang has a long history of coastal erosion which is very evident around the site, along with a reputation for being a smugglers' haunt back in the day!

Day 3 Activity 1

Carisbrooke Castle
The Island's strongest castle

Experience what life was like at Carisbrooke Castle for the people who lived there. The castle has experienced sieges, imprisoned kings, seen off the Spanish Armada and spans over 1000 years of history. What better way to bring the curriculum to life and cover multiple topics than to stand at the spot where history happened. Book a free self-led visit and find out more about how the changing role of Carisbrooke Castle, or choose from one of our two interactive Discovery Visits that will inspire your pupils.

There are fascinating artefacts on display in Carisbrooke Castle's museum housed in the Great Hall, St Peter's Chapel and Constable's Lodging.

Younger students will love dressing up as Norman soldiers or Civil War troopers and meeting the castle's famous donkeys which are still used to draw water to this day.

Day 3 Activity 2

Osborne
Visit Queen Victoria's summer retreat

Bring history to life and get a real insight into the private lives of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children at Osborne. Their home can teach many aspects of the curriculum across numerous subjects in a fun and engaging way. Enjoy a free self-led visit or get hands-on with history as part of a Discovery Visit, led by the formidable (and wonderful) costumed interpreter Mrs Pilkington. During the session your pupils will step into the world of a servant and discover what life was like below stairs.

No trip to the Island would be complete without a visit to this royal seaside palace where Queen Victoria lives with her beloved Prince Albert and their nine children.

Day 4 Activity 1

Isle of Wight Steam Railway
An award-winning Steam Railway to engage, inspire and excite you!

A living, working museum with a heritage railway passing through 5.5 miles of unspoilt countryside. The visitor can expect to step back in time to a bygone age. The adjacent, modern Train Story exhibition presents a timeline of the era of steam with lots of interpretative exhibits and hands-on activities.

The whole site is a living, working museum of Island steam history.

The Model Village, Godshill
You have to see it to believe it!

Meticulously and humorously crafted scale models of the local area.

Absorb the slower pace of life in the early 1900s, leaving the hustle and bustle of modern day life outside the gate. Keep your eyes open for little Islanders at work and play!
