At the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, many aspects of railway engineering can be explored and studied. The role of the engineer is essential for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway to operate fully as a heritage railway museum, replicating the mechanical engineering processes of the steam era.

What can you discover at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway?

By prior arrangement, you can visit the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and see the work of engineering staff and volunteers.

The railway makes a fantastic case study as it is a compact yet fully functional example of a working railway. The historical and heritage elements also allow for exploration of the engineering knowledge that underpins modern engineering on the railway today.

If appropriate, you could experience the many engineering processes that take place in the carriage and wagon workshop area and train sheds, discovering how the heritage railway is dependent on engineers and their skills.

Areas that could be explored here include:

  • Track maintenance/operations
  • Permanent way aspects
  • Security of the work environment
  • Carrying out routine inspections
  • Exploring the engineering world
