Whatever the weather, take a journey back in time with an enjoyable day of excitement and nostalgia at the award-winning Swanage Railway.

The 12-mile trip takes you through the beautiful Purbeck countryside, with incredible views of Corfe Castle.

Start your journey at Norden, close to Corfe Castle, and meander on down to the lovely Victorian seaside resort of Swanage where you will find stunning sandy beaches and plenty of parks and open space to explore.

Or begin at Swanage's vintage themed station and head north instead, watching out for the majestic sight of Corfe Castle coming into view high on the hill as you approach.

Alternatively, you can hop off/on the train at any of the stations along the route and make a day of it!

Iconic Corfe Castle View

The journey offers a unique vantage point as the train puffs beneath the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle. This provides a brilliant stimulus for Literature & Creative Writing, allowing pupils to imagine the landscape as it appeared to travellers a century ago.

Engineering in Action

Youngsters can observe the intricate mechanics of steam power and traditional signalling systems. Watching the locomotive take on water or seeing the signalman operate the lever frames offers a practical look at Victorian Inventions & Technology in the modern day.

Evacuees and Wartime

The railway serves as a living classroom for studying World War II. Pupils can learn about the vital role the line played in troop movements and the evacuation of youngsters from cities to the safety of the Dorset countryside during the conflict.

Local Heritage Heroes

The story of how volunteers rebuilt the line after its 1972 closure is a true case study in Local History. Students can discover the power of community spirit and perseverance, learning how the tracks were saved from being lost to the landscape forever.

Key Learnings

Changes Within Living Memory

Many volunteers and visitors remember the line before its closure in 1972 and its subsequent restoration.

Edwardians

Many of the stations, particularly the beautifully restored Swanage station, reflect the architectural style and social etiquette of the early 1900s. Pupils can explore how the railway helped turn Swanage into a fashionable Edwardian seaside resort.

Industrial Revolution

The railway is a living example of the period's impact on travel, trade, and social connectivity.

Inventions & Technology

Exploring steam power, engineering, and the mechanics of the industrial age.

Local History

Vital for understanding the development of Purbeck and the Isle of Purbeck's connection to the wider region.

Transport

This is the core theme of the attraction. Pupils can study the evolution of travel, the transition from horse-drawn carriages to steam, and the later move toward diesel, exploring how the development of the tracks opened up the Dorset coastline to the world.

Victorians

The railway first reached Swanage in 1885; the architecture and "holiday culture" of the line are deeply Victorian.

World War II

The railway played a significant role in troop movements and coastal defence during the war.
