Residential trips are incredibly rewarding, but we understand that the "what ifs" can cause significant anxiety for Trip Leaders, especially when considering the Isle of Wight with the added complexity of the ferry journey.
While thankfully unusual, there are rare occasions where a student may need to be repatriated home early.
Typically, this occurs for one of three reasons: severe behavioural issues where a student must be removed from the cohort, significant mental health challenges (such as extreme homesickness), or an unfortunate accident.
To alleviate the stress and financial uncertainty surrounding these situations, Education Destination has put in place a robust Repatriation Support Policy. We provide logistical assistance and financial capping so you can focus entirely on the wellbeing of your students without worrying about unexpected travel costs.
Foot Passenger Repatriation (Fully Covered)
For behavioural or mental health reasons, the most efficient solution is often a mainland handover. A parent or chaperone drives to Portsmouth, while a teacher escorts the child across on the ferry as foot passengers.
Education Destination and Wightlink will arrange and cover the ferry cost for the teacher and child in this specific scenario, allowing the teacher to hand over the student and immediately return to the cohort. Children aged 12+ may travel unaccompanied.
Vehicle Repatriation (Capped Costs)
In the event of an accident where a child is immobile or hospitalised, a parent may need to bring a car over to the Isle of Wight to visit or collect them. To support families in this stressful time, we cap the cost of an emergency return ferry crossing (car + driver + child passenger) at £100

While we assist with the major cross-Solent logistics, please note that the school remains liable for any local taxi fares or transfer costs on the Island if your dedicated tour coach is unavailable or cannot be diverted from the main itinerary.
