UKSA Offers Young People of All Abilities a Range of Activities to Learn Life SkillsEducation Destination

UKSA in Cowes is a world-leading maritime academy that offers school groups a truly transformative experience. For many students, this is their first real introduction to the sea, providing a safe and exhilarating environment to try their hand at sailing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. These beginners' sessions are specifically designed to foster a sense of adventure while promoting healthy living through physical activity. By taking to the water in the world-famous Solent, students gain a unique perspective on the island’s maritime heritage while developing essential gross motor skills and physical resilience.

The learning journey at UKSA extends far beyond the water’s edge, touching on key curriculum areas such as climate, weather and environment. To navigate safely, students must learn to interpret wind direction, tidal flows, and cloud patterns, turning the river Medina into a living laboratory for meteorological and geographical study. Additionally, activities like raft building challenge pupils to apply principles of inventions and technology as they experiment with buoyancy, knots, and structural integrity. This hands-on approach to problem-solving ensures that every session is as intellectually stimulating as it is physically demanding.

Perhaps the most significant impact of a UKSA visit is the rapid development of life skills. Through collaborative tasks like steering a keelboat or coordinating a raft race, students build vital communication, leadership, and peer support skills. These shared challenges create lasting bonds and a profound sense of achievement that stays with the children long after they return to the classroom. The professional instructors are experts at guiding young learners through their initial nerves, helping them grow in confidence as they master new skills and discover the importance of teamwork in a maritime setting.

Teamwork Through Rafting

Raft building is a fantastic exercise in communication and peer support. Students must apply principles of inventions and technology to create a buoyant craft, working together to navigate their handmade vessel across the water.

Confidence & Resilience

Overcoming the challenges of the sea fosters incredible personal resilience. Teachers often see a transformation in students as they master new maritime skills, leaving Cowes with a profound sense of achievement and stronger group bonds.

Key Learnings

"The Sea"

This is the core of the UKSA experience. Pupils develop "ocean literacy" by learning about buoyancy, tides, and marine safety. Direct immersion in the water helps students understand the sea as both a powerful natural force and a vital resource for recreation and transport.

Agriculture, Food & Healthy Living

The Sandown Hotel is the sister hotel to the much larger Sandringham Hotel, literally just across the road next door. Breakfast will be mainly self-service and continental style and may be taken in the Sandown Hotel or at the Sandringham depending on group size. Packed lunches and evening meals will be provided via a third party caterer that we work with regularly. Again, depending on group size the meals may be served at either premises. We will confirm this in good time.

Climate, Weather & Environment

Success on the water depends entirely on understanding climate, weather and environment. Students learn to interpret wind strength, cloud patterns, and barometric pressure to safely navigate the Solent, providing a practical, high-stakes application of meteorological science.

Inventions & Technology

Maritime activity is driven by inventions and technology. Pupils can investigate the engineering behind modern yacht design, the physics of sail power, and the sophisticated GPS and sonar systems used in modern navigation to keep vessels safe at sea.

Maritime History

The Medina estuary is steeped in maritime history. Students can learn about the traditional shipbuilding industries of Cowes and the strategic importance of the Solent as a gateway for global trade and naval power throughout the centuries.

Rivers & The Water Cycle

Located where the River Medina meets the sea, UKSA is an ideal spot to study the final stages of the water cycle. Students can observe tidal surges and the mixing of fresh and saltwater, seeing how rivers interact with the wider ocean.

Transport

UKSA showcases the diversity of maritime transport. From high-speed RIBs and keelboats to traditional sailing vessels, students can compare different methods of moving across the water and discuss the efficiency of wind power versus mechanical engines.
