This is our second year saying with Calbourne Mill and we have enjoyed coming back here.
The staff on site are wonderful and are accommodating to any dietary restrictions that the staff and children may have.
Both breakfast and dinner choices could be improved upon.
Breakfast - The children and staff are offered cereal and toast, which works for most children but if there could be a choice of a hot breakfast like sausage or bacon sandwiches, it would be appreciated.
Dinner - We had a lot of "fussy" children so more simple options could be provided alongside the options given. For instance, toasties, plain pasta, chips and nuggets etc.
It is evident that they are making improvements to the bedrooms but in some of the showers downstairs which were being used for the staff, the shower only had a lower shower head. A shower that could be attached at the top would be preferred.
These are very small issues that would only enhance our stay. Please pass on how wonderful the staff are, including their dog, Luna.

There were a few health and safety issues in the cabins. Large sharp knives left out on the side which children could reach. Windows didn't have a safety lock so children could climb out onto the roof. Stair banister was broken and therefore could have led to an accident if someone leant on it. No indoor space for children to spend time in due to living room spaces being used as bedrooms. Hot water was extremely hot, could have burnt children in the shower if not warned/careful. Walking access to the car park and main road from the cabins with no fence/barrier. Open water (river) in the outdoor recreational area. Overgrown weeds and broken grass in the outdoor recreational area.

We would be happy to go back here again next year, however there are things that could be improved. The cleanliness throughout, but particularly the upstairs bathrooms was an issue that was raised.
The food was a big improvement on the last place we stayed but was not great. The sandwiches were very good. The beef lasagne on the first evening was over cooked, most pupils who opted for the Bolognese pasta on Wednesday, were just served a very runny and poor 'tomato' sauce and we would have expected something else served up with the pizza and any extra were quickly whipped away before staff could have any more! Adults were not offered adult size portions. The jacket potatoes were great, but just baked beans every evening is not a 'variety' of toppings. The salad went down really well and was certainly a positive.
We do feel that there needs to be a gate and better boundary fencing from the carpark, as the lodges were very open to the public at night etc. Fortunately, we did not have any sleepwalkers this year, but the openness could be an issue if this was the case.

There were a few issues with allergies and making sure that they had snacks available for our diary free and nut allergy children.
Some of the sausages had coconut in and one child with an allergy ate them - they were okay after piriton, but I had to check the ingredients to notice this.
Would it be possible to discuss menu options for next year?
The school before had broken one of the shower doors in a lodge, so it meant they had no shower door for the week.
The volunteers were great and helped with an issues and the lodges were ready.

Loved the lodges! Great space for children to play after dinner and in the evenings.
The staff were very friendly.
Food wise, we did have a lot of picky eaters but we would have preferred more options that a "child friendly" (pizza, burger and chips etc)

The accommodation was brilliant, honestly one of the best I'd stayed in. The kitchen staff were lovely and extremely accommodating.

A brilliant experience - the children loved staying here. Bathrooms were a bit tight with only two in each lodge so might suit a smaller group - we had 70 students sharing 4 lodges so we had to stagger showers morning and evening to prevent queues. Otherwise we had no complaints. Quality, comfy beds, great food (and very flexible for fussy eaters) and plenty of space to run around outside safely.

Your feedback isn’t just filed away; it’s our primary tool for quality control. Every comment is reviewed internally and directly dictates which providers remain part of our residential portfolio.
Where improvements are needed, we roll up our sleeves. For instance, when a hotel received poor ratings for their packed lunches, we collaborated with their chef to rebalance their catering budget — scaling back over-generous breakfasts to significantly boost the quality of the mid-day meals.
Similarly, when a popular crazy golf course faced feedback about chaotic arrivals, we implemented a 15-minute staggered entry system to ensure every school group receives a calm, organised welcome.
At the end of every season, we compile these insights into anonymous performance summaries for all our partners, providing them with the clear, actionable data they need to keep improving.
We also reward our most successful partners with our Customer Excellence Awards each season, and our customer feedback is key to deciding the most deserving winners.
