Contextual Summary

The resource task enables students to develop their knowledge of the basics of coastal erosion. It then focuses in on observational skills when comparing chines on the Isle of Wight. Following this, pupils are asked to use photographs to generate a piece of art work.

Implementation

This resource will require children to learn about the effects of coastal erosion. An example of the impact on landscapes (and human habitation) can be seen on the BBC (KS1) learning clip outlined on the lesson plan. Once pupils have watched this, they can study photographs of chines (google have many available images of the Isle of Wight chines) and compare and contrast photographs of different chines, drawing out similarities and differences. Chine photographs will then be given to students and they will decide which image they would like to create in a piece of art work. Children could have access to a variety of media, or perhaps re-create the image in the style of a specific artist. Once complete, children can try and match the final pictures to the photographs, giving reasons for their choices. In the plenary, students could locate the chines on an Isle of Wight map, using the language of direction. This resource will provide children with an enriched visit experience as they will be reflecting on their trip in a creative way.
