Précis

Students work in pairs or small groups directing each other through the maze. The task is designed to appeal to students in key stage 1, but could be a fun activity for any key stage!

This fun activity enables students to develop their use of directional language, and to practise giving instructions and directions in a clear and methodical way.

Implementation

This task and activity will require students to help each other through the maze, therefore needs to be completed on-site at Blackgang Chine. It would be useful if students have had previous teaching on clockwise and anti clockwise, and knowledge of quarter, half and three-quarter turns. This resource will provide students with an enriched experience as they will be using their visit to practise important mathematical skills, whilst having fun and working together.

Key Skills Practised

• Using mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line
• Distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise)
• Communication skills - using clear instructions.
