This is an English writing composition task that enables students to practise their writing skills, specifically to review and to comment.

The task links to the students? visit to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and is relevant to students in key stages 2 and 3. This task links the visit with core English reading skills and allows students the opportunity to reflect on their learning and experience.

Implementation

This task can be introduced before the visit to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, in class, by studying the features of reviews; students could practise a review on a local area or a holiday destination they?ve visited.

When on site, students could make notes on the key features of the railway to use in their review on returning to class.

Learning Opportunities

Pre-Visit

Review and comment skills could be pre-taught in class prior to the trip so students are aware of the information they need to note during the visit.

On Site

Noting down features they may want to include in their review, for example what they can do here, things they learn, how they enjoyed the features of the railway (train ride, carriages, scenery, going back into the past, etc.), and any other observations

Post-Visit

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate their reflection skills; they will be able to practise writing a coherent and relevant review with comments on the key features of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and learning therein.
