Implementation

Upper key stage 2 students, prior to their visit, could investigate the life and paintings of Van Gogh to put the task in context. Lower key stage 2 students could look at types of seascape interpretation. They could also practise using a range of media so that they are prepared for the task. They could also watch the story of ?Austin?s Butterfly? - available on youtube. During their journey on the Red Funnel ferry, pupils can use a digital camera to capture a variety of images of the journey and of East Cowes harbour. They should be encouraged to photograph a range of scenes (see task suggestions). Upon return to school, students will be given time to investigate the images captured and decide which is their favourite (some may want to focus on elements within the photographs, rather than the whole image, if preferred). Following this, they will need to investigate different examples of seascape art work, using the internet. They should find examples which use different media before deciding which one inspires them the most. After making their choice, they should produce their image using the methods which enthuse them (e.g. charcoal/pencil/textiles etc.). Once the first piece of work is complete, upper KS2 students will produce their second piece in the style of Van Gogh?s seascape paintings. They then reflect on their finished pieces and decide which piece of work they prefer and why.
