Implementation

Prior to their visit, students could carry out some research into palaeoart and its uses. One good example for study could be to look at the differences in representation of the Iguanadon and how and why this has changed over time. It is important to consider the purpose of palaeoart and how it links to the development of scientific understanding regarding fossils and the creatures they came from.

During their visit to the Dinosaur Expeditions Centre, students will identify types of palaeoart and will choose to respond creatively to something they are inspired by, such as a fossil or pattern. They may learn more about the changes in palaeoart and the different types and purposes of the artwork on display at the centre.

Upon return to school, students could further investigate palaeoart and how it can range from scientific to traditional, or indeed abstract, and can work on improving on their own artistic responses, perhaps using different media, e.g. charcoal/pencil/textiles etc.

Students could reflect on their finished pieces and decide which piece of work they prefer and why.
