Implementation

This is an on-site resource, to be completed during the visit. There are three different units designed to be completed by smaller groups on a carousel system. However, parts of the tasks may be followed up afterwards at school should time not allow completion on site. It would be useful for teachers to bring squared paper. It is anticipated that students will have an enriched experience as they will be using their school visit as a learning environment, and this will reinforce how the effective discovery and handling of data can provide solutions to problems.

Key Skills Practised

  • Measuring distance and area in metres and centimetres
  • Comparison and conversion of numerical data
  • Scale
  • Manipulation of numbers within the decimal system (including millions for upper
  • Identifying appropriate operations to solve a problem

Learning Opportunities

Pre-Visit

Before the visit, pupils could revise measurements in metres and centimetres. Some understanding of scale would be a useful addition.

On Site

Students to complete tasks within the Mathematics resource linked to this document

Post-Visit

The tasks are designed to be extended and followed up at school, post visit.

Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate their skills in estimation, measurement, comparisons and conversions of numerical data, understanding of scale and the solving of simple problems.
