This is an English resource that engages students with their visit to Blackgang Chine. The resource task enables them to consider stereotypes linking to pirates, different viewpoints, interviewing techniques and the use of emotive language in certain situations.

Contextual Summary

Students will find out about modern-day piracy and be given the opportunity to write challenging questions for a Somali pirate (and write emotive responses form the interviewee).

Implementation

This resource will require students to investigate typical representations of pirates in films. They will also need to watch television news interviews which challenge the interviewee. In addition, students will need to find out about the award-winning film Fishing without Nets which tells the story of a pirate ambush from the perspective of a Somali pirate (the original short version of this film can be watched on-line for free). Students will then write a question-and-answer script in which the Somali pirate is interviewed by someone for a news programme. The questions will need to be formal (and challenging) and the responses will need to use emotive language so that the pirate can get his point of view across. This will need to be filmed (and edited) in order to produce a final video (upon which children can reflect and self- evaluate). This will provide children with an enriched experience as they will be using their visit in a creative way.
