Précis

Following their visit to Robin Hill, students will produce a sketch map of Robin Hill, depending on the needs of the user. They will then compare a sketch map to an aerial photograph and transfer the features. As an extension activity, pupils will have to answer a range of questions, using scale.

Contextual Summary

This is a geography resource that engages students with their visit to Robin Hill Country Park. This resource enables students to practise their geographical mapping skills, and also requires them to use Maths (scale) and ICT skills to present their work. Students will be asked to produce a sketch map for an audience of their choice based on the Robin Hill Country Park map.

Implementation

The resource task is designed for post-visit use. It enables students to draw a sketch map (based on a current example) and adapt it, depending on the needs of the user (e.g.: young children/teenagers/ adults). With their user in mind, students will have to consider the detail required, the symbols used and which areas may be of interest. Following this, students will compare their sketch map to an aerial photograph (e.g. from Google Maps). They will need to plot some of the attractions from the theme park on to a copy of the photograph (this could be done using ICT or could be drawn on to a paper copy). As an additional activity, pupils could use the scale on the aerial photograph to answer a variety of questions about distance/area/ perimeter of some aspects of Robin Hill.
