Students research the likely human and physical processes present at Blackgang and the area. They will record their observations when at the park, focusing on evidence of processes and their impact. On return to school they will draw conclusions from their data.

Contextual Summary

This is a geography resource that engages students with their visit to Blackgang Chine; it features pre-visit, on-site and post-visit activities. The resource task enables students to develop their knowledge of the physical and human processes taking place in the Blackgang Chine park and environs, e.g. coastal erosion and impact of tourism, etc. The resource promotes pre-visit discussion and research, the use of geographical vocabulary, and post-visit summary of findings and predictions.

Implementation

This resource will require students to discuss the possible processes (and the impact of these) they think they might see evidence of at Blackgang Chine and the surrounding area, during pre-visit preparation. They will have already learned about erosion and other key physical processes. They can research the history of erosion at the park at www.blackgangchine.com/about-us . During their visit to the park, students will then record their observations of physical and human processes at the park (and impact, if relevant). On return to school, students will summarise their discoveries by answering a set of key questions that relate to both physical and human processes, making links between these and the environment seen at Blackgang Chine park and the immediate locale. They will consider impact, and the future likelihood of continuing effects on the landscape.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the human and physical (coastal) processes affecting the south coast of the Isle of Wight, specifically the Blackgang area. They will develop their skills of collation and evaluation, and will draw conclusions.
