Shanklin is a popular seaside resort on Sandown Bay in the east of the Island. Famous for its sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, chocolate-box Old Village shops and hotels, plus a wooded ravine Shanklin Chine.
Perhaps Shanklin's most famous resident was poet John Keats, and the town also features in Operation PLUTO ("Pipeline Under The Ocean"), an austentacious World War II effort to supply fuel to allied forces in northern France which contributed to the success of D-Day. Parts of the apparatus can still be seen in the chine and at other Island locations.
Shanklin is great for all ages, but perhaps a little overwhelming for the very youngest visitors
