"Be A-Maze-d! Maths position and direction challenge!"

Students work in pairs or small groups directing each other through the maze. The task is designed to appeal to students in key stage 1, but could be a fun activity for any key stage!

Contextual Summary


This fun activity enables students to develop their use of directional language, and to practise giving instructions and directions in a clear and methodical way.

Key Skills Practised
  • Using mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line
  • Distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise)
  • Communication skills - using clear instructions.

Learning Outcomes

Students will follow and give instructions involving position, direction and movement. They will recognise and use whole, half and quarter turns, both clockwise and anticlockwise. They will communicate with their partner effectively and clearly.
