Students investigate the many costs involved in providing for the donkeys at the Sanctuary, and answer relevant questions. They also present the information in a graph or chart.
This is a maths resource that engages students with their visit to the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary. The resource task enables them to practise their data handling skills. Students are asked to investigate the costs of keeping a donkey, using their knowledge of costings gained at the Donkey Sanctuary as their base material. The task is designed to appeal to students in upper key stage 2. This resource links to the Donkey Sanctuary’s English persuasive leaflet task allowing for effective cross-curricular opportunities.
Students could consider running costs such as their own expenditure weekly, monthly and then calculate annually and daily. The task should be discussed in class prior to the trip so students are bearing this in mind when on their visit, focusing on obtaining the relevant information during their visit to the Donkey Sanctuary. It would be useful if the students have already revised some features of collecting and using data.
Students will demonstrate their data handling skills. They will show evidence of data collection, recording and the subsequent use of this data to provide solutions.
