Précis

Students will learn how a chine is formed (due to erosion) and that there are a number of chines on the Isle of Wight. Using an OS map, they will find Isle of Wight chines and provide 6-figure grid references to pin-point their location. They could then use compass directions and road numbers in order to direct someone to the chine from Newport (using road numbers). Pupils will then spend some time researching Isle of Wight Chines and produce a booklet (which could include any number of the activities listed on the lesson plan). The final section of this booklet could make the links between the features of chines and why they played an important role in smuggling on the Isle of Wight.
